There really are only a few frequently asked questions in our field. Most people seem to know what mental health is about.

The most frequently confusing area is one of specialty. In our field we have the psychiatrist. They focus primarily on medications management of symtoms. Outside of the first visit which last typically an hour. Expect a ten to fifteen minute visit. The real therapy is done in my office. The psychotherapist office. We focus on the underlying issues behind the problem. "Talk Therapy" or "analysis".

Psychiatrist are trained medical doctors who specilize in psychotropic medications. These are medications that alter the chemicals in the brain.

Psychotherapists are trained in human behavior, analysis, and psychopathology. We spend aproximately one hour with each patient talking about issues that cause the problems and helping the client get to the underlying root of the disorder.

This approach gives you the option of treating the symptoms with medications or the underlying issues with therapy.

Obviously in most cases the best approach is one that is discussed with your doctor or therapist, and is specifically designed to treat your individual issues.
Most cases can be treated initially with therapy and if needed a refferal can be made to a psychiatrist once a diagnosis and course of treatment is determined.

Are therapist able to diagnosis and treat? YES, we are liscenced to diagnose and treat patients and almost every insurance will pay for our services.  Psychotherapy is not magical it is a medical approach founded in scientific evidence used to treat disorders of the mind and personality.

How do I know If a peson is Liscenced to treat my condition? Check with the state board and ask for proof of liscensure. All psychotherapist must be liscenced to practice. Most good psychotherapist will also have specialty certifications and national board credentials. Just ask. If they dont, I strongly encourage you to find a reputable therapist. A liscence to practice therapy is essential. It is evidence of their training. The same goes for the psychiatrist, dont just assume they are board certified. Ask, and check the state website. You would be amazed at how few doctors are actually certified in their field. By the way all of the practioners at Associated Psychiatric Services are liscenced and board certified except for Jenni Adams. She holds a masters degree in teaching and is a registered nurse who does specialty counseling in the areas of weight loss and wellness.

What is the difference between a psychotherapist, a psychologist, a mental health counselor, a marriage and family counselor and a clinical social worker? Although some would disagree with me. Essentially there is no difference other than political agenda and reimbursement rates. The true difference is really a matter of educational theory and specialized training. In the state of Florida for instance. We all practice and are liscenced under the same board.  Except for clinical psychologist who have training in psychological testing and personality testing.

How do I pick who to go to for help? The most obvious anwser is to do some research. Reputation, personality and training are the three most important factors when picking any physician. Lets face it if you dont match with your therapist personality, it wont work, you will never open up to them. It also wont work if you think they are an idiot.  Just like the lawyers always say (in their full page shameless solicitation ads, outside of the obvious PICK ME agenda) The selecting of a psychotherapist or psychiatrist is not a desicion that should be taken lightly.  It is your mental health and wellness we are talking about. What could be more important than that?

What can I expect to pay? Prices vary per practioner.  My current cost are $75.00 for the initial visit, then $65.00 an hour for subsequent visits. Or if you are like most you simply pay your copay. We do all the rest for you. Simlpy call us with your insurance information and our office staff will get you set up.

Do you Take Insurance? YES, at the present time I am on the following insurance plans, Florida Health Care Plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Magellan, Aetna, The Allen Group, Horizon and Cigna, United Behavioral and several EAP programs. If I am not on your provider list we can still start therapy. You simply pay in advance for the services at my current cost and then we file for you with your insurance company and they will reimburse you the going rate, or we will ask for an "out of network" allowance.
